Beffroi d'Aire-sur-la-Lys

Grand'Place, AIRE-SUR-LA-LYS

The belfry is one of the most popular monuments in Aire-sur-la-Lys. Built between 1716 and 1724, with the approval of Louis XIV, the belfry towers 58 metres above the town. It is attached to the Town Hall, which was also built at the same time, and shares the same architect: Jacques Héroguel.

Built in the square Baroque style, it has 7 floors, where the town's archives are stored. It also houses the rack for the 14 carillon bells, as well as 2 imposing bells dating from the 1920s.

Once you've climbed the 236 steps to the belfry, you'll be treated to a breathtaking view. The belfry has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.

The building can be visited from April to September with a guide. Information is available from the Tourist Information Centre in Aire-sur-la-Lys. Please note: climbing the belfry is not suitable for children under 12 or people with pacemakers.
