Esquerdes - Lumbres soft link

The tour starts in front of the Maison du Papier, housed in a former mill in the Aa Valley. This museum and workshop traces the history of paper from its invention in China to its arrival in Europe and brings to life the paper-making industry that shaped the region: its 7-tonne mill wheel, driven by the River Aa, is still used to make paper using traditional methods. It’s the perfect introduction, combining industrial heritage and nature, before setting off for Lumbres.

Shortly after the start, the route crosses this little bridge with its cheeky name, spanning the River Aa in the heart of Esquerdes. It’s a charming and easily recognisable landmark for cyclists, marking the entrance to the surrounding countryside.

The route then follows Rue de Fersinghem, through countryside typical of the Aa Valley, towards the village of Setques.

The route crosses a level crossing here, near Setques. This is a section that requires caution, serving as a reminder that the railway line still runs through the valley.

The route joins a cycle path that follows the course of the River Aa, offering a peaceful, leafy setting away from traffic. It’s a pleasant stretch where you can enjoy the riverside scenery as you approach Lumbres.

The final few kilometres continue along this gentle, safe path, which leads to the centre of Lumbres, bringing to a close a short but heritage-rich route that takes in the river, the village and the history of paper-making.
