Les Sarts
The Aa valley forms chalky hillsides bordered by the river, a favourable environment for human settlement from Neolithic times. At Elnes and Wavrans-sur-l'Aa, the hills still contain many carved flints attesting to this ancient presence. The steep slopes are dotted with wooded calcareous grasslands, which have been set aside as a vast National Nature Reserve for their biodiversity: many protected species, including orchids and butterflies, can be seen here.
